A comprehensive step-by-step process designed to support you every step of the way

We will discuss your weight loss goals, medical history, and determine the best weight loss option for you.

2-4 weeks prior – a consultation with our specialist bariatric dietitian.

2-4 weeks prior – a consultation with our specialist bariatric psychologist.

1 week prior – a consultation with the pre-admission nurse of the hospital.

1 week prior – a final consultation with your surgeon.

Surgery Day

Day of Surgery

Minimally invasive procedure performed by two fellowship-trained surgeons using advanced laparoscopic and/or robotic technology.

Your operation will give you the ability to control your weight in a way you never could before.

However, your operation is just the beginning of the journey of long-term success in controlling your weight.

Ongoing Care & Lifelong Support

Ongoing

In the first year after operation we have a specific program in which you will be seen by your surgeon, nurse, exercise professional and dietitian for multiple appointments. We will be supervising your weight loss and issuing guidance and help during this time. It is vital that you attend all your appointments and particularly all your dietitian appointments.

7-10 days post op – Post-operative appointment with LapSurgery Australia's Nurse.

2-3 weeks post op – Consultation with Dietitian.

5-6 weeks post op – Surgeon review.

2.5 months post op – Consultation with Dietitian and Exercise Professional.

4-5 months post op – Surgeon review.

6 months post op (for gastric bypass) – Specialist Physician review with comprehensive blood test.

6.5 months post op – Consultation with Dietitian.

12 months post op – Specialist Physician review with comprehensive blood test.

At 6 months from your surgery you will see one of our physicians with results of your blood tests who will advise you on any medical problems or vitamin deficiencies and arrange to treat these if necessary.

Thereafter we will call for you every year and offer blood tests and an appointment with one of our physicians to check your overall health and well-being.

The cost varies depending on the procedure type, individual circumstances and whether or not you have adequate private health insurance. With adequate private health insurance Sleeve Gastrectomy ranges from $7,500-$8,000, Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass ranges from $10,000-$13,000 and Revisional Surgery ranges from $10,000-$15,000. Our Self-Pay Program is available for Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery to some patients without private health insurance and ranges from $20,500 - $22,500. We can discuss private health insurance coverage and payment options during your consultation.
Most patients stay in hospital for 1-2 nights after surgery. You can typically return to light activities within 2 weeks and resume normal activities within 4-6 weeks. Our team provides comprehensive post-operative care and support throughout your recovery.
While a GP referral is helpful and may be required for some insurance claims, it is not mandatory to schedule an initial consultation. We recommend discussing your weight loss goals with your GP as they can provide valuable input into your care.
Like all surgical procedures, bariatric surgery carries some risks including bleeding, infection, and complications from anesthesia. However, our use of minimally invasive technology and having two bariatric-trained surgeons at every procedure significantly reduces these risks. We have an excellent safety record tracked by the Bariatric Safety Registry.
Many private health insurance policies cover bariatric surgery for eligible patients. Coverage depends on your specific policy and waiting periods. Our team can help you understand your insurance benefits and explore all payment options.
Weight loss varies by individual and procedure type. On average, sleeve gastrectomy patients lose 60-70% of excess weight, while gastric bypass patients lose 70-80% of excess weight within the first 12-18 months. Long-term success depends on commitment to lifestyle changes.
Absolutely. All consultations and medical information are strictly confidential and protected under Australian privacy laws. We maintain the highest standards of patient confidentiality at all times.
We provide comprehensive aftercare including regular follow-up appointments, nutritional counseling, psychological support, and access to our multidisciplinary team. Our support continues throughout your weight loss journey to ensure long-term success.
